Study: The Day of Atonement
Purpose: The purpose of this Bible study is to show that the final phase of Christ’s ministry in the heavenly sanctuary began in the year 1844 A.D.
The message of the judgment is profound and multifaceted. This is merely a brief summary of the big picture . . .
Exo 25:9 According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.
Exo 25:40 And look that thou make them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount.
Jesus showed Moses in a vision induced while he (Moses) was on the top of the Mountain that burned with Gods presence, Mt. Sinai. Moses was told to build a dwelling place for Gods presence, to dwell among the Israelites as they traveled on their way to the “Land of Canaan.” Moses was given a divine ability to remember what he was shown, just as the artisans that designed all the furnishings, were given all wisdom in fashioning the items for the tabernacle furnishings. This portable Tent of Meeting, was set-up when the “Cloud by Day, traveled to a place where it stood still. When it stood still, there Moses commanded the setting-up of the tabernacle. As long as the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night stayed in that place, the children of Israel stayed. When either, the pillar of fire, or the pillar of cloud lifted up and began to move, so likewise did the “order come to break camp, dis-assemble the tabernacle, and follow the cloud that moved before them, leading them on their way towards Cannan. [Jesus has always "led" His people even from Eden.]
This portable “tent of meeting” finally became a fixed house of worship during Solomons’ reign in Israel, after his building of the “Temple Proper”, this was the first stationary “TEMPLE”, house of worship. It was designed as well according to the vision given Moses, but had a much more elaborate ornate construction and atmosphere. The ceremonies however in regard to worship remained the same, as the original tabernacle “tent of meeting”, so called because this is where the priest, High Priest met with YHWH, daily and annually [the Day of Atonement] in the worship of the true God.
Specifics are of utmost importance to God, when it comes to worship. Just read the account of the ceremonies involving the “daily sacrifices”, and you will quickly see, just how important and detailed these ceremonies were. These were all carried out to the “letter” to teach us the importance of dedicated true worship, takes a personal effort. It’s NOT just the officiating of the priest/high priest alone. We have a part to play in “WORSHIP.”
This wilderness “tent of meeting”, called the Tabernacle which means by the way, a dwelling place. Consisted primarily of the Sanctuary proper. It was called the tent of meeting because it is where, God meet with the High Priest on the day of Atonement specifically, and would be there in the presence of Israel, behind the curtain on the Mercy Seat, atop the Ark of the Covenant, behind the vail that separated the Holy place from the Most Holy place. The priest daily officiated in the Holy Place, BUT only the High Priest was instructed to enter behind the vail, and then that was only once a year, on the Day of Atonement, to atone for the sin of the people and the nation itself.
Lev 16:2 And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.
Lev 16:34 And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year. And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.
Lev 23:28 And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God.
All the actions and ordinances and operations of this daily worship service, was given to Israel to teach them the significance of holiness, and true dedication in their worship of God. It was also to teach both them and us, the reality of the “true Sanctuary”, that’s in heaven. Where the true “High Priest”, [Jesus Christ] is officiating for us today, as our High Priest before the Father, interceding for us just as did Moses, Aaron and every other designated earthly high priest did as they continued to observe and practice the worship services of the portable and stationary temple sanctuary services.
This practice continued up until the crucifixion of Jesus, when the “vale/curtain” within the temple was rent in twain/two, by unseen hands from the top of the vail, the tear ripped downward, instead of upward, signifying that it was God who tore this vale and not man, putting an end to the daily sacrifices, as the ULTIMATE sacrifice had been made. There was NO MORE need for the ceremonial functions of the “temple”, as Jesus Christ was made our “sacrifice” for the remission of SIN.
This earthly service was to teach us: That God does things in a certain way that accords with His will, and best interest of us. He wants us to learn to trust Him and to allow Him to form our characters as close as we can, to His character. We are to strive to allow Him to work in and through us, by using our will, to will to do according to His good pleasure and NOT our own. We have been given in a way a “merciful” reprieve from having to bring a sacrifice to the sanctuary. However now, instead of bringing a daily sacrifice to a building or temple, to offer as such, we NOW daily instead of the sacrifice dying and giving it's life force of the blood in our places. We NOW die to “SELF” daily and give our life blood metaphorically to Jesus. That we might be found as clay, in the potters’ hand, to be formed into a vessel of honor. While in the heavens above Jesus is conducting services before the Father as our Great High Priest, in the sanctuary that’s found in heaven right this minute.
The tabernacle (wilderness tent of meeting) was a type of the anti-type. (The true sanctuary in Heaven) The anti-type (Sanctuary in Heaven) is always greater than the type. (Wilderness Sanctuary). This process type vs anti-type continues ALL through out scripture, in various applications.
Some more examples of type and anti-type.
Able was a type of Jesus: In that he shed his blood for “righteousness sake”
Joshua was a type of Jesus: In that he “Lead the People into the Land of Promise”
Joshua is the English of "Yeshoua" which is Hebrew for Jesus.
There are hundreds of “types” verses “Anti-Types” found throughout scripture.
HOWEVER always remember that the Anti-Type is ALWAYS greater than the Type.
Armed with this knowledge, you will see as you read the scripture that there are uncountable types and anti-types, throughout from Genesis to Revelation.
Heb 8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;
Heb 8:2 A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.
Heb 8:3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man [Jesus] have somewhat also to offer.
Heb 8:4 For if he were on earth, [alluding to His Heavenly presence] he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: [Jesus cannot be classified as just a priest, He is our Great High Priest]
Heb 8:5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.
Heb 9:11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
Heb 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he [Jesus] entered in once into the holy place, having obtained [past tense] eternal redemption for us.
Heb 9:23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; [the earthly tabernacle, with the “blood of animals”] but the heavenly things [the Sanctuary in Heaven] themselves with better sacrifices than these. [The Sacrifice of Jesus, which is a far better sacrifice]
Heb 9:24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
A good understanding of the Sanctuary will do a wonderful thing for your faith, if you will only ponder it. It was given to us in writing for a reason.
Psa 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.
1. Exodus 25:9, 40: According to this passage, the sanctuary on earth is a blueprint – a pattern or replica – of the heavenly sanctuary . . .
2. Hebrews 8:1-5: The earthly sanctuary was built as a replica – or mirror – of the heavenly sanctuary. This was not a literal expression of the dimensions of the heavenly sanctuary, but rather a metaphorical, vague shadow of the heavenly sanctuary – which was not built by the hands of human beings. We have a high priest officiating in the sanctuary who understands each and every one of our struggles . . .
3. Hebrews 9:11, 23, 24: Jesus Christ is the officiating High Priest of the sanctuary . . . The earthly sanctuary hints at the wonderful work of the heavenly sanctuary. In order to understand what happens in the earthly sanctuary, it is imperative that we understand the services in the earthly sanctuary. There were two types of services in the earthly sanctuary:
a. The Daily Ceremony: The purpose of the daily ceremonies was to transfer the blood from the sacrificial animal and sprinkle it upon the altar and the veil separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.
b. The Yearly Ceremony: The purpose of this service was to purge the Most Holy Place – specifically the veil – of all the blood sprinkled on it during the previous year.
4. Leviticus 16:2, 34, 7-10, 15, 16, 19, 21, 22:
a. Leviticus 16:2, 34: The priest was to sprinkle the blood on the veil on an annual basis.
b. Leviticus 16:7-10: There are two goats: One set apart for the Lord and the other representing the devil . . . The Lord’s goat was to be set apart, slaughtered, and sacrificed as a sin offering.
The blood of this goat “the Lords goat” was taken into the Most Holy place behind the veil. After the cleansing of the Most Holy place, the “sins” of ALL the people and the nation of Israel, were then symbolically transferred onto the High Priest, in this case Aaron. He then left the Most Holy place, and walked through the Holy Place and exited the Tabernacle. He then approached the “live goat” that represented Satan, and lay his hands upon the live goat, and prayerfully and symbolically transferred the “sins” from himself to the “live goat.” The devils “goat” representing Satan (Azazel) was then to be led out into the wilderness and released to wander there. This represented the 1000 year existence of Satan upon this earth, after Jesus comes the second time. The Millennium begins, and the Earths inhabitants are redeemed and others destroyed. The Second coming has various aspects that occur simultaneously, i.e. such as the gathering of Gods people both those alive and those resurrected, at the same time the Millennium begins, Satan is bound by the Angel to the abyss, which is nothing more than a desolate earth without inhabitant, therefore it’s called the abyss. During this 1000 years Satan will wonder with the “sins” of the people upon him just as did the “Azazel goat” each year during the “Day of Atonement, which was every year.
Lev 16:15 Then shall he [the High Priest] kill the goat of the sin offering, [the Lords goat] that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:
Lev 16:16 And he [the High Priest ] shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.
[These cleansings then transferred symbolically the sins that accumulated over the year of ceremonial services, to the High Priest, who was a “type” of Jesus, who bore our sin on the Cross. The High Priest then “bore” the sins out of the Sanctuary across the court yard to the Devils goat, called Azazel. He then lay his hands on this goats head, and in a symbolic transfer, transferred these sins to the goat, thus cleansing the sanctuary for the year.]
Lev 16:17 And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.
Lev 16:21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:
All of the services both daily and yearly had applications, that help us understand the plan of redemption, and how Gods justice will be completed. It was a way that Jesus could be understood as our “Great High Priest”, that took our “sin” upon Himself at the Cross, and bore them to the grave. Satan will have the “sin” of the people placed upon him at the Second coming, to wander this desolate, devoid of life planet, during the 1000 years. Afterward in which he, the beast, the false prophet, and the wicked will be burned up forever from the presence of God. The Earth will be made “new” and then, and only then will Abrahams seed inherit the “Real Promised Land.”
AGAIN: We have here another “type” and the “anti-type.”
The promised land to Israel, called Canaan was only a “type” of the “Real Anti-Type” which is Heaven, and life with God Himself. Remember that the “anti-type” is ALWAYS greater than the “type.”
Heaven to be personally with our LORD, is much greater than, obtaining earthly land to dwell in. The land of Israel to God has always been them with Him, just as they were following Him in the wilderness wandering, in Heaven they will settle with Him in their new home. IMMANUEL God with Us.
